Mission To preserve, create and disseminate knowledge through quality and relevant teaching and research; to work with stakeholders to facilitate expansion and development of Tourism, Travel, Event and Hospitality sectors for the betterment of society
Introduction
The School of Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management was created in October, 2012 out of School of Business and Economics to become the new School in the University, with three department, hosting a number of programmes; Five (5) Diploma programmes, Three (3) degree programmes and Four (4) post graduate programmes. The school is one of the largest and most comprehensive of tourism and hospitality management schools in Kenya and to a large extent, the East African region. The school is at the forefront in bridging training needs and gaps identified in Kenya Vision 2030, National Tourism Policy, and the Ministry of Tourism’s Strategic Plan with regard to the context of the nation’s tourism industry through knowledge, competencies and skills requisite in the management of the travel, tourism and hospitality industry in Kenya. It aims at offering insights into the real-world problems and issues confronting the tourism industry and; the travel and tour operations, hotel & hospitality and event management sectors, in particular, at the local, regional and international level. The school also has competent faculty members who are all round in practical and theoretical areas of tourism and hospitality. Through innovative teaching and learning approaches, such as Problem based learning (PBL), industry aligned exposure, globally mapped approach and seasoned Professors and Doctors, the Department within the school continue to: promote international tourism, travel and hospitality research and development through the Centre for tourism, travel and hospitality research, produce internationally oriented graduates, service providers and service managers; forge and sustain close collaborations with stakeholders in the service field of travel, tourism, events and hospitality, as envisioned in Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the millennium development goals. The outcome of this commitment has been the relentless supply of competent human resource to; airlines, marketing departments, human resource departments, tour operations companies, public relations departments, travel agencies, various Hotel and hospitality establishments, Kenya Wildlife Services, conservancies, and conservation organizations, local international Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Ministry of Tourism, Museums, and cultural centres, banking and insurance, Community-Based organizations (CBOs), Theme/man made parks, tourism training institutions and organizations that are largely service organizations
