To be recognized internationally as a centre of excellence in Information Sciences.

Mission To offer education and training by developing high-level manpower for the management of information systems, services and resources in the country through practical and development oriented programmes, research, continuing education programmes and community based information activities.

The School of Information Sciences was established in 1988, four years after the establishment of Moi University in 1984. The essence of its establishment was to address a great shortage of manpower in the following areas: Library and Information Studies; Records and Archives Management; Publishing and Media Studies; Information Technology From a humble beginning in 1988, the School of Information Sciences has developed to become a leading training ground for information-related disciplines in East and Central Africa. It offers programmes ranging from bachelors to PhD degrees for the information market. In addition to Kenya where it has a near monopoly as a training ground for information professionals, it attracts students from as far a field as Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda. The school hosts the university radio station which in addition to providing educative, informative and entertaining programmes for the university fraternity, also acts as a training facility for students pursuing journalism and other media related programmes. In addition, the school has state of the art computer laboratories that cater for both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research. The school boasts a competent teaching and research establishment unrivalled in East and Central Africa. It has over 16 PhD holders which include five professors. With this establishment, the School has and indeed, continues to attract research students from Anglophone speaking countries on the African continent.
